Attacks on Instant Messaging Networks on the
Rise
Akonix
Systems, a San Diego-based research firm has released a
report purporting the highest monthly of Instant Messaging
viruses on record.
According
to the Q3 Threat Report, 25 viruses were reported on IM
networks during the month of September. Akonix has been
tracking viruses for about 18 months and they have been
reporting on them for four month. Their data suggests that
there could be a new phase of IM virus emerging. Up until
recently, they were variants of email-borne viruses but
Akonix says that isn’t the case anymore.
David
Jaros, marketing director for Akonix, reports their research
shows an average of one new IM virus every day now and any
organization with an IM network is vulnerable. Additionally,
researchers indicate that hackers are using IM to take over
PCs and then carry out zombie-like attacks. Researchers
concede that the problem is two-fold. For one, there is a
lack of security on Instant Messaging networks and second,
for many organizations, Instant Messaging has become a
mission-critical application.
One
solution being recommended by security researchers is to
route IM traffic over a proprietary network, created to
strip out any viruses before they reach PCs on the
enterprise network.
Regardless of what an organization does, researchers say
that organizations simply can’t rely on consumer networks
for enterprise-level security.
